Last week my friend and I went to the Tyneside Cinema to watch Persepolis. As the opening credits unfolded, I was suddenly jolted awake (it was almost 9pm and I had already worked a hectic and tiresome week). All I could think of to say after the film was this: That was beautifully made.
What was so breathtaking and gorgeous about this animation? It was the way that the characters moved. The slump of the shoulders and the way their feet hopped down from step to step to step as they went down the stairs. It was beautiful because it was tragic and sad because it was real and has been the reality for many people. I thought it was beautiful because it was honest. The central character is the author of this tale and I think it must be very close to her own true story.
In short, this story is about a girl growing up in Iran, trying to understand the events that are unfolding around her. I highly recommend this movie and defy you not to be moved by it.
Have you seen Perspepolis? What did you think?
